A One-Year Story: Why I Decided to Apply for the ESC Program in Rzeszów

The Beginning of an Unforgettable Journey

When I first decided to apply for the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) program in Rzeszów, I had no idea just how transformative the next year would be. Looking back now, the experience feels like it passed in the blink of an eye — one of those rare moments when time seems to vanish because you’re living so fully in the present.

Appreciating the Process

From submitting the application and waiting for a response, to preparing and finally arriving in Poland, every stage of the process taught me something valuable: patience, openness, and courage. Each step mattered. I’m grateful for the chance to be part of something bigger than myself.

During my time in Rzeszów, I took part in a wide range of activities that enriched both my personal and professional life. I regularly visited local schools, working closely with students from various backgrounds, including those in vocational education and training (VET). These school visits allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the local educational community while also learning from the students’ energy and fresh perspectives.

One of the highlights of my ESC journey was organising and leading Open Cafés — informal gatherings where people from different countries could come together to exchange stories, cultures, and ideas. These events became safe, inspiring spaces for community building and intercultural dialogue.

Another project close to my heart was Monday Stories, a weekly session where I facilitated discussions and workshops on storytelling, self-reflection, and cultural awareness. It became a creative outlet for many of us, a space to grow, share, and connect.

Friendship and Cultural Exchange

One of the most beautiful parts of this experience was the friendships I formed — especially with my best friend, Sihem. Together, we even traveled to Armenia, my homeland, so she could experience my culture firsthand. That journey deepened our bond and gave us memories we’ll carry for life.

Inspired by our shared experiences, we also created an Instagram page called Sous le ciel d’Arménie (Under Armenian Sky), where we documented our ESC adventures and promoted cultural exchange. It became a joyful and creative expression of everything we were learning and discovering.

Personal Growth and New Perspectives

Living and working in a new environment pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. I became more confident, improved my communication skills, and gained a deeper understanding of myself and others. These lessons will stay with me and guide me in my future career.

Advice for Future ESC Volunteers

To anyone considering a long-term ESC project: set some clear goals for yourself before you begin. Think about your life and career plans, and how this experience can support them. That clarity can make a big difference, especially during challenging moments. Stay open-minded, say yes to opportunities, and fully embrace the journey, because it has so much to offer if you let it.

Final Thoughts

This past year has been a journey of growth, connection, discovery, and unforgettable memories. I’m incredibly thankful for every moment and excited to see where this path leads next.

With love and hope for all the beautiful things ahead,
Warm regards,
Mariam
