Sometimes the best opportunities come when you're not actively looking for them. That is exactly how I discovered the European Solidarity Corps, a programme that eventually gave me the chance to live abroad, meet people from different cultures, and grow both personally and professionally.
My journey started during the final year of my Master's degree. As graduation was approaching, I was looking for an opportunity that would let me gain practical experience abroad while also fulfilling my university's internship requirement. Having already done a traditional Erasmus during my Bachelor's degree, I knew I wanted another international experience, but this time something different from studying abroad.
During my research, I unexpectedly came across the European Solidarity Corps. What makes this even more interesting is that I discovered the programme completely on my own, through TikTok. I saw several videos of young people sharing their volunteering experiences abroad, and I got curious. Until then, I had never heard anyone at my university talk about ESC, despite the incredible opportunities it offers.
At first, I was just interested in the idea of volunteering abroad. But the more I read about ESC, the more convinced I became that it was exactly what I was looking for. I found out that the programme gives young people the chance to support local communities while developing valuable personal and professional skills. What impressed me most was the combination of solidarity, cultural exchange, and learning.
After creating my profile on the ESC platform, I started exploring projects across Europe. I was amazed by the variety of opportunities available, from youth work and education to social inclusion and community-based initiatives. It felt like there was a place for everyone, no matter their background or previous experience.
Eventually, I decided to apply, and that decision opened the door to an unforgettable experience. Through ESC, I got to meet inspiring people, improve my communication skills, become more independent, and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and communities.
Because I had found this opportunity entirely on my own, I soon realized that a lot of students didn't even know it existed. So during my volunteering project, I made it a personal goal to spread awareness about volunteering whenever I could. Through presentations, workshops, social media content, and conversations with students, I tried to share information about a programme that can offer so much but is often overlooked. I wanted other young people to know that opportunities beyond Erasmus exist, and that they can be just as transformative.
Looking back, discovering ESC was one of the most rewarding moments of my journey. It showed me that stepping outside my comfort zone can lead to incredible opportunities, meaningful connections, and experiences that go far beyond what you initially expect. For me, it all started with a few videos on TikTok, but it became one of the most valuable experiences of my life.
