Cultural Crossover: Breaking Stereotypes, Building Bridges

2023-01-24

From 16 to 20 January 2023, a unique youth exchange titled “Cultural Crossover” took place in Rzeszów. Young people aged 16–20 from Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Poland came together for a five-day program filled with discussions, learning experiences, and intercultural exchange.

“It was more than just meeting new people – I truly realised how much we have in common despite the differences in our cultures,” said one participant from Ukraine while reflecting on the experience.

The program focused on themes such as cultural diversity and shared heritage, while also creating space to discuss the current challenges faced by young people in Europe and around the world.

One of the key moments of the exchange was a brainstorming session about stereotypes. Participants shared their thoughts and experiences regarding common assumptions about people from different countries.

“Before this project, I had certain ideas about people from other countries, but talking with them face-to-face completely changed my perspective. I realised how superficial those assumptions were,” admitted one participant from Hungary.

Throughout the exchange, participants worked together to challenge these stereotypes, getting to know each other better and building bridges of understanding.

The cultural program was enriched by a visit to the Rzeszów Underground, a nearly 400-meter historical route that took the participants on a journey through the city’s past.

“It was fascinating! We walked beneath the main square and learned about the history of a place where we are now building new relationships and friendships,” added a participant from Poland.

Evenings were dedicated to intercultural gatherings, where each national group presented their traditions, music, and cuisine. The project concluded with a final evaluation session and the official awarding of YouthPass certificates.

“Cultural Crossover” not only opened new horizons for the participants but also introduced them to additional opportunities and programs available for young people across Europe.

“It was an incredible experience that will definitely influence my future activities. I learned how important it is to understand other cultures in order to build a better future,” summarized one participant from Poland.
