Building Bridges: A Week of Cultural Exchange and Connection in Rzeszów

2024-07-05

Last month, we hosted our youth exchange program, ‘Bridges over Cultures,’ welcoming participants from Czechia, Hungary, and Poland to explore the many ways we can communicate across cultures. Throughout the week, we delved into various forms of communication, from verbal and nonverbal interactions to artistic expressions.

On the first day, we got to know each other and explored the surroundings and history of Rzeszów, creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone to immerse themselves in the local culture. One highlight of the week was our ‘Secret Friend’ game, where participants left small gifts and thoughtful notes for their new friends, spreading joy and creating lasting memories.

The second day kicked off with workshops on communication. In the morning, we covered the essentials of interpersonal communication by engaging in teamwork activities that fostered better understanding and connections. In the afternoon, participants became journalists, interviewing locals to learn more about Rzeszów’s culture and its hidden gems.

Wednesday’s focus was on non-violent communication and diversity, exploring how to bridge cultural differences to achieve common goals. Dynamic activities encouraged participants to share their own experiences and challenges in stepping out of their comfort zones. That afternoon, our weekly ‘Open Cafe’ event provided a platform for discussing ‘Conspiracy Theories,’ allowing participants to practice their public speaking skills in a fun and engaging setting.

Thursday’s workshops centred on art and communication. In the morning, we explored how art and painting can express emotions and ideas more powerfully than words. Participants created artworks reflecting their feelings, which we showcased in a vibrant exhibition. After lunch, we shifted to communication through music, analyzing famous song lyrics before hosting our own AI-assisted ‘Eurovision’ contest. The participants crafted original songs and competed for the top spot, resulting in lots of laughs and unforgettable moments.

On the final day, we highlighted the importance of Youthpass and the Erasmus programs, teaching participants how to reflect on the skills and competencies they gained during the week. We wrapped up by revealing everyone’s secret friends from the first day, followed by writing notes on each other's backs and taking group photos to capture the incredible week we shared.

Overall, ‘Bridges over Cultures’ was an unforgettable experience filled with learning, laughter, and new friendships. We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with such an amazing group of young people and look forward to more cultural exchanges in the future.
