Summer Hangout Picnic 2020

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of hangout is a favorite place for spending time, also a place frequented for entertainment or for socializing. That is why the name of our first international picnic became Summer Hangout 2020 picnic by the Wisłok River. The event has been initiated by 16 international INPRO volunteers who have been spending their summer in Rzeszów within the European Solidarity Corps program. Before starting to talk about the event itself, we would like to briefly share with you about the European Solidarity Corps. It is the new European Union initiative that creates opportunities for young people to volunteer or work in projects in their own country or abroad that benefit communities and people around Europe. For detailed information, you can visit its official website.

Rzeszów is the charming capital of Podkarpackie province, the main economic, academic, cultural, and recreational hub in southeastern Poland. There are 7 universities offering 165 study programs in Rzeszów. Therefore, more and more Polish and international companies have been selecting Rzeszów as a place to open their branches. Today, over 50 thousand young people study at the universities operating in the city, while higher education schools have been continuously extending their educational offer and making it more attractive. Being the innovation capital of Poland, Rzeszów has been developing very fast in recent years.

Everybody would agree that festivals are an expressive way to celebrate glorious heritage, culture, and traditions. They are meant to rejoice special moments and emotions in our lives with our loved ones. They play an important role to add structure to our social lives and connect us with our families and backgrounds. That is why we decided to bring together the local people of Rzeszów with the international residents of the city through a fun interactive activity.

The picnic was an opportunity for people of Rzeszów to get to know the culture of different regions of the world, overcome language barriers, break stereotypes, and simply spend the afternoon in an interesting way. The picnic took place at Kwadrat Kultury by the Wisłok River (at the dam on the side of Podwisłocze Street) between 2 and 8 PM with free entrance.

From the 7th of July until the event day, 22nd of August, our ESC volunteers worked every day as a team to create a comprehensive program for the participants. They were supported by professional organizing, multimedia and psychology workshops, and necessary special devices from INPRO. By the way, International Project’s Association in Rzeszów, INPRO, is a youth-oriented association dedicated to the personal development and education of young people from Rzeszów and Podkarpackie voivodeship. Through our projects and activities, we strive to attract people, not only from different cultural backgrounds but also from different origins, ages as well as opinions and beliefs.

The final program of the Summer Hangout 2020 included various booths. In the INTERCULTURAL BOOTH, our volunteers talked about Ukraine, took us to Bulgaria, revealed the secrets of Pakistan, broke stereotypes about Azerbaijan, shared interesting facts about Spain, and encouraged us to visit Vietnam.

In the meantime, OPPORTUNITIES CORNER became an info point to learn about international educational offers for young people and adults, including presentations on programs such as internships at the European Parliament, European Solidarity Corps, Erasmus+ projects and Scholarships. Additionally, we provided the official promotional materials for each opportunity to deepen the horizons of our participants in the above-mentioned programs.

We all know that SPORT EQUALS HEALTH, so we created a zone where the most active can relax by participating in playing badminton, paper chase (Podchody), egg race, and the most challenging teamwork of pulling the rope. Finally, we all GOT ON THE DANCEFLOOR, were taught and performed dances from the countries of volunteers, Macarena and Flamenco (Spain), Punjabi Bhangra, and Bollywood dances (Pakistan).

Our event was visited also by families and parents with children. That is why our volunteers also prepared something for the youngest participants – KIDS CORNER a zone with games, animations as well as educational games. Our official partner in the “Summer Hangout 2020” Fundacja Rzeszowska hosted a photo zone, where everybody was able to take commemorative photos and participate in the cyanotype photography workshops.

At the end of the event, we invited our event participants to listen to the performance of local and foreign singers

who sang popular songs.
Zhahanshakh Badel
Ilona Babicz;
Jakub Kielar;
Marllon Alvez;
Miki Sanchez.

After the event our volunteers came together with the local people and talked about themselves and the event. We are very glad that despite the challenging global pandemic and hot weather, we achieved all the determined goals of our event and enjoyed the last week of Summer 2020 in our full potential!
