Open Cinema

Two times a month on Monday at 7.00 p.m. we invite you to RIK for screenings of documentaries and films. Each time we choose different and carefully selected movies about human rights issues, grassroots movements and European values. The screening is followed by a discussion club where participants can share their thoughts and impressions after watching a film.

The event is free of charge and open for everyone interested.

Since July we have already screened the following movies:

“The Experiment” tells the real story of an experiment that took place in 1971 in Stanford and was led by the American psychologist Philip Zimbardo. Fourteen volunteers have to impersonate inmates and guards in a fake prison for two weeks. A reporter, Tarek Fahd, decides to take part to the experiment in order to write the scoop of his life.

“Audrie & Daisy” is a movie about two teenage girls who were sexually abused while intoxicated and then shamed on the Internet.

“13th” explains discrimination in judicature giving an example of the United States.

“Before the flood”, Leonardo DiCaprio, UN messenger of peace sets on an adventure to find out what is happening with the world and the environment.

“Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower” tells a story of the Scholarism movement in Hong Kong launched by a teenager to fight for democracy.

“Nobody Speak. Trials of the free press” focuses on the Hulk Hogan vs. Gawker Media trial in order to show how plutocrats can use their power and influence against the free press.

“Into the Inferno” is a 2016 documentary film directed by Werner Herzog. In it, Herzog explores active volcanoes from around the world, following volcanologist and co-director Clive Oppenheimer. In an unnerving documentary, images of throbbing magma are spliced with stories of the people living with the threat of spectacularly destructive eruptions.

“Free to play” is a 2014 documentary film by American video game company Valve Corporation. The film takes a critical look at the lives of Benedict “hyhy” Lim, Daniel “Dendi” Hishutin and Clinton “Fear” Loomis, three professional Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) players who partecipated in The International, the most lucrative ESports tournament at the time.

“The Choice is Ours” is an alternative vision of what the future can be if we apply what we already know in order to achieve a sustainable new world civilization. It calls for a straightforward redesign of our culture in which the age-old inadequacies of war, poverty, hunger, debt and unnecessary human suffering are viewed not only as avoidable but as totally unacceptable.

“Earthquake” is a 2016 Russian-Armenian drama film about the 1988 Armenian earthquake. On the 7th of December 1988 a disastrous earthquake spanned almost a half of the territory of Armenia. 25.000 people died, 19.000 became handicapped, more than half of a million left without a roof over their head. The natural disaster becomes a background for the story of two main characters, taking place in the town of Leninakan.
