Life During the Lockdown

Written by Sinan Yeşil

I consider myself a very sedentary person. I am fully aware that this lockdown had many negative impacts on the vast majority of people. However, for me, this time was valuable and beneficial. I am sure that most of you know by now, whether or not if you are a person who sets goals and then postpones, finding excuses.

I believe that those kinds of people are their own worst enemy when it comes down to personal achievements. It is safe to say I am my worst enemy too. Ever since my freshman year in university, I wanted to learn how to play the guitar and how to speak Spanish, of course, these were not my only ambitions but, at the time, these were the most convenient ones. I have always believed that a person should know how to play at least one instrument in their life, not for the show but for the joy.

However, even though they were the most convenient ones, I neither learned how to play an instrument or speak Spanish up until the lockdown.  As I have said before, I tend to find excuses to postpone, but I was out of silly excuses to postpone since I had to stay home every single day, I convinced myself that it was the time to learn or achieve and to remind myself that I can do what I want to do if I really want to do it.

So, with the help of a friend I acquired a guitar, made a schedule, and started to practice from the very beginning which is developing finger muscles and motor skills. Still, I haven’t quite learned how to play as a guitarist, but I am hopeful that soon I will be able to. Right after that, with the confidence of achieving something along the way, I have got the motivation to do more which, at last, led me to Spanish. It is worth to mention that international friends that I made throughout my volunteering and Erasmus+ exchange were also helpful when it came to guiding, I am truly grateful.

Anyhow, in a span of two months, I was able to get from zero to A2 level so far. I know that it doesn’t sound like it is a big deal, but progress is progress and we should count every step on the way. So, long story short, what I would like to say is that you should do whatever you want to do since this is a perfect time to.
